Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on May 30.
Batting first, Mumbai Indians had put a total of 228 runs on the scoreboard with Rohit Sharma (81 runs off 50 balls) playing a vital innings to give his team a massive edge in this knockout clash.
In the run-chase, the Titans had their moments. They were ahead at one stage, needing 81 runs off 42 deliveries with eight wickets in hand. But, Mumbai Indians made a remarkable comeback, bringing their champions mentality to the fore and clinched the victory in the end.
Sai Sudharsan’s Efforts Go in Vain
Chasing 228 runs, Gujarat Titans were rocked early as their captain Shubman Gill (1 run off 2 balls) was trapped on the pads in front of the stumps by Trent Boult, resulting in an LBW.
Sai Sudharsan (80 runs off 49 balls) and Kusal Mendis (20 runs off 10 balls) counterattacked, sending Boult to the cleaners in his second over. While Sudharshan smashed a six off the left-arm pacer, Mendis went a notch higher and collected two maximums.
Boundaries continued to flow in Richard Gleeson, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah’s over. GT raced to 66 runs for the loss of one wicket in the powerplay.
In a moment of madness, Mendis, who was on his IPL debut, lost his balance against Mitchell Santner and hit the wickets while playing a pull.
Washington Sundar (48 runs off 24 balls) came to bat at No. 4 and stitched an 84-run stand for the third wicket with Sudharsan. The duo looked at ease throughout their stay at the crease and also kept the required rate in check.
Boult, who was already having a horrible day, was belted by Sundar in the 13th over. The left-handed batter hammered three boundaries, including two sixes, bringing the equation down to 81 runs off 42 deliveries.
This seemed possible with GT sitting in the driver's seat. However, Bumrah, who is a cheat code, was brought back into the attack and delivered straight away. The pacer floored Sundar with a yorker that cleaned him up.
Gleeson took the wicket of Sudharsan in the 16th over. He played a scoop but missed it all ends up as a low full-toss shattered the stumps.
GT needed 54 runs off the final four overs. Ashwani Kumar bowled a decent 17th over and gave away just nine runs.
Despite conceding a six in the 18th over by Rahul Tewatia (16* runs off 11 balls), Bumrah only gave away nine runs in total, making the task more difficult for GT.
With 36 runs required off two overs, GT had to go all-out. Sherfane Rutherford (24 runs off 15 balls) went for a slog off Boult only to get holed out at deep mid-wicket.
Shahrukh Khan (13 runs off 7 balls) kept GT in the hunt by smacking a six off Boult in the final ball off the 19th over.
24 runs were needed off the last over. Richard Gleeson was cramping up but bowled the first three balls of the over and conceded just three runs. He went off the field. Ashwani took over from there and completed the rest of over.
Gujarat eventually finished at 208 runs for the loss of six wickets as Mumbai won by 20 runs in the Eliminator.
