Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah was born on 6th December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to Jasbir Singh and Daljeet Bumrah. He has a sister named Juhika Bumrah. His father was a chemical businessman and his mother was a school teacher and he belonged to a middle-class family. His father passed away when he was just 5 years old due to Hepatitis B. Both Jasprit and his sister were raised by their mother in Ahmedabad.
Bumrah was enrolled into Nirman High School in Ahmedabad, the same school where his mother was a vice principal. He also played in the school’s cricket team. He often used to play street cricket and he trained his bowling with a tennis ball. His bowling action was labeled as unorthodox by many, from the very beginning of his career. Kishore Trivedi of the Gujarat Cricket Association in Ahmedabad helped him hone his skills and transitioned him from tennis ball to leather ball. But it was John Wright, head coach of Mumbai Indians in 2013, who helped Bumrah get his first major breakthrough despite his awkward bowling action.
Bumrah married Sanjana Ganesan on March 15, 2021 in a private ceremony in Goa. Sanjana is a sports presenter and TV host and also a former Miss India finalist. The couple kept their dating life private and their close-lipped wedding also was a surprise to many. They had their first child, son Angad Bumrah, on September 4th 2023. His life outside the pitch isn’t flashy or showy, and he generally likes to keep things private.
Bumrah bought a lavish bungalow in his hometown of Ahmedabad back in 2015 which was valued at Rs 3 crore in 2021. This bungalow features muted color tones with minimalistic interiors, spacious living rooms, balcony garden and a personal gym. He is also the owner of an opulent Rs 2 crore mansion in Mumbai where he moved along with his wife after their marriage in 2021. Bumrah’s love for minimalistic interiors prevails in this mansion as well. It also includes an entertainment room, balcony garden and personal gym. He is also said to own residences in Pune.
Like other celebrities, Bumrah possesses an affinity for exquisite automotives. His garage includes the elegance of the Mercedes-Maybach S560, Range Rover Velar, Nissan GT-R, Toyota Innova Crysta, and Hyundai Verna among others. Bumrah was appointed as the brand ambassador of Skechers in March 2025, the same brand that also sponsors his IPL team, Mumbai Indians. He is also the current brand ambassador for Naturaltein, Foundit, and L&T Finance Ltd. His portfolio also contains other noteworthy brands, such as OnePlus Wearables, Tata Motors, Performax, BharatPe, Unix, FanCraze, Dream11, and Twills; once again stretching his horizons beyond cricket.
Bumrah surprised the selectors with his unorthodox bowling action at the Gujarat Cricket Association’s Under-19 district selection trials. After that, he made his T20 debut for Gujarat against Maharashtra in the 2012-13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His incredible performance in the final helped his team win the tournament after defeating Punjab. In 2013, the then-head coach of Mumbai Indians spotted Bumrah’s talent and asked him to play for MI. He was signed to MI at the age of 19 and instantly impressed on his IPL debut.
Jasprit Bumrah made his ODI debut for the national team against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 23, 2016 where he clinched 2 wickets and conceded 40 runs. Just 3 days later on January 26, he made his T20I debut against the same opposition at the Adelaide Oval. He went an impressive 3 wickets for 23 runs in that match. His test breakthrough came on January 5, 2018 against South Africa at Cape Town where he took 4 wickets. Came with high expectations and delivered on all three of his international debuts.
Bumrah’s debut for his first-class cricket was for Gujarat against Vidarbha in October 2013 where he delivered a spectacular performance by taking 7 wickets. He also won the 2015-16 Vijay Hazare Trophy playing for Gujarat, clinching 5 wickets in the final against Delhi.
Bumrah was selected for the India A team after his antics in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and it placed him directly under the Indian legend Rahul Dravid. He first played against Australia A in the 2015 India A tour of Australia, where he delivered terrific bowling performances, thanks to his unconventional and unique bowling style. It was also in this series where he scored his first ever first-class half-century, displaying his sagacity with the bat as well. His India A performances directly put him into the senior team.
Bumrah is renowned for his unorthodox bowling approach and that mostly comes from his mechanics. He takes a short stuttering run-up unlike other fast bowlers with a long run up to generate pace. His hyperextended arm is almost vertical prior to releasing the ball, and he also performs minimal elbow action. It’s almost as if he flicks the ball with late seam movement and his arm’s action generates most of the ball’s pace. His bowling often confuses batters who have, therefore, less time to react to his deliveries.
His ability to deliver inch-perfect yorkers is what makes such a feared opponent. Since his release point is unconventional, batters can’t exactly predict the path of the ball coming towards them. He also releases the ball just a tad bit late which allows him to make precise throws. He is arguably one of the best death over specialists of all time, especially given his ability to perform under pressure. He can bowl precise yorkers one after the other, all over 140 kmph, while in the death overs or Super Overs. His incredible prowess combined with the fact that he doesn’t overuse yorkers is what makes him so unpredictable and so deadly.
Bumrah’s pace consistently clocks in around 140-145 kmph, but he is also known for delivering slower balls to catch batsmen off guard. He can also bowl as quick as 150 kmph. In white-ball cricket, he usually balls at good length during the early overs and mostly full-length yorkers during the death overs. In Test cricket, he prefers the off-stump to 4th stump channel with an upright seam.
He holds excellent bowling averages across all three formats with 19.4 in Tests, 23.55 in ODIs and 17.74 in T20s.
IPL is where Bumrah found his big breakthrough back in 2013 at the age of just 19. After MI signed him, he debuted against RCB and clean bowled Virat Kohli in the very first over. Talk about making a statement! His IPL record speaks for itself. He garnered 182 wickets in 143 matches with an average of only 21.79. He has won five titles with Mumbai Indians in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also boasts one of the best death over economy rates in the history of the competition.
Bumrah was diagnosed with lower back stress fracture in September 2022, which caused him to miss the T20 World Cup 2022, IPL 2023 and most of India’s 2022-23 season. In March 2023, Bumrah underwent surgery and was placed in rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Despite the pain, he worked through it and made his comeback in August 2023.
BCCI, along with India’s medical and coaching staff devised a strategic workload management for Bumrah. This means that he was rested for the bilateral series in 2023 with a strong rotation policy in place. Bowling load software, biomechanical analysis was also used to track his fitness and spikes in workloads. He returned against Ireland as Team India’s captain in August 2023 against Ireland, right before Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC World Cup 2023.
As of 2025, the Indian bowler’s net worth is estimated to be somewhere around Rs 60 crore ($7 million). He holds a Grade A+ contract from BCCI, which bags him around Rs 7 crore annually. In regards to IPL, he was retained for Rs 18 crore in 2025 by Mumbai Indians. His IPL earnings have been estimated to cross Rs 68 crore by 2025. Apart from cricket, he has amassed massive wealth from his brand collaborations as well. Endorsing renowned brands, Bumrah charges Rs 1.5-3 crore per brand deal. His luxurious residences and car collections all weigh over Rs 10 crore which add significantly to his overall net worth.
