Chase, Warrican Named WI Test Captains After In-Depth Assessment

The head coach of the West Indies Darren Sammy announced that the selection process for the new captain would involve a thorough evaluation, including psychometric assessments, structured interviews, and scoring across six core competencies: leadership, team respect, cricketing acumen, behavior, communication skills, and psychological profiling.

Six players were shortlisted for this evaluation: John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, and Jomel Warrican. Roston Chase achieved the highest combined score among the candidates, followed closely by Jomel Warrican, and both have been entrusted with the leadership roles.

Roston Chase, who is 33 years old, will achieve his 50th Test appearance as the captain of the West Indies. He last played Test cricket in 2023 and is known as a reliable all-rounder who excels as a wicket-taker and contributes significantly to the lower middle order with the bat. Although Chase has previously captained the West Indies in white-ball formats, this marks his first stint as captain in Test cricket.

Vice Captain Jomel Warrican is an experienced left-arm spinner who has established himself as the team's primary spinner. He is expected to assist Chase with his experience and to take charge when Chase is unavailable.

Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican’s first major assignment will be hosting Australia for a three-match Test series, scheduled to take place from June 25 to July 17.
