Rohit Sharma reveals emotional talk with parents after Wankhede Stadium honour

Rohit Sharma Wankhede Stadium

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma rarely gets emotional, but when it comes to his family and close friends, the opening batter shows his emotions. The 38-year-old shared details about the personal conversation he had with his parents after getting to know about a stand being named after him at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In an interview with prominent journalist Vimal Kumar, the Mumbai Indians (MI) player said that he urged his parents to watch the match from his stand after it was inaugurated. For the unversed, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced that the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will be renamed Rohit Sharma Stand. Mumbai Cricket wanted to give a fitting tribute to one of India's best white-ball openers and captains of the country.

For the Team India skipper the honor not only shows his contribution to the team, it also holds a very significant and emotional bonding. "I told them that when the stand with my name is inaugurated, they have to come and sit in it," he said.

It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma's parents have hardly watched him play from the stands. Like most of the Indian parents, the 38-year-old's parents also get too nervous while watching him play.

"They usually prefer watching from home because they get too nervous at stadiums," he explained.
"They don't like going out much." However, he did manage to convince them on two special occasions-one being his first match as India captain at the Wankhede in 2017.

Rohit Sharma opens up about his connection with Mumbai & fans

Reflecting on the massive honor, Rohit stated, "When people call me 'The King of Mumbai,' I truly appreciate it. It's their love, and I don't take it for granted. I never imagined I'd come from where I did and reach a point where people say that about me. A stand being named after me at Wankhede was emotional. That ground means everything to me."

Currently, Rohit is back to form after a string of low scores. Coincidentally, his form has coincided with MI storming back into the IPL 2025 season with five wins on the bounce. In his last four matches, the right-hand batter has scored 26, 70, and 12 runs, respectively, giving MI a powerful start upfront.
